Shantaram

April 3rd, 2011

How may peoples profile will have these description jostling for space novelist, bank robber, charity organizer,  junkie, screenplay writer, jail breaker, doctor, mujahadeen. Gregory D Roberts is one such character and Shantaram is his book about his experience in India, Bombay/Mumbai to be specific which is a world in its own.

The narrative of Shantaram is philosophical. I would describe it as a kind of out of body experience, you look at India that you live in through the eyes of a foreigner and you see more than you see. Shantaram is a fictionalized -auto-biography. You can make out the fiction part from the actual part as the contrast stands out and there are too many co-incidences to be true.

The whole book is divided into  5parts covering early experience in Mumbai, slum, his brush with underworld and others. There is also a whole site dedicated to the book at www.shantaram.com

Well, overall a must read .

April 13th, 2010

“I have both held and beheld unlimited power and of it I know but one thing. It drives men mad.” –Alexander the Great
Seven wonders of the ancient world was compiled for a reason. According to Mathew Reilly Alexander the Great broke the Capstone into seven pieces and hid each piece in one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A rare solar event called the Tartarus Rotation is scheduled to occur. Whoever assembles all seven pieces of the Capstone at this particular time and under certain specific conditions will gain absolute power for the next thousand years. The catch is that if failed to assemble this at the right time the earth is doomed to oblivion.
So much power surely going to get many countries to scramble their forces to get a hold of that Capstone for themselves. But a team led by Jack West Junior, where few countries have put their best people in the team wants to secure it so that they can save the world from the doom. The capstone is hidden well, so there are crypts to be broken, time based traps to be overcome. Just sit back and let Jack West Junior run the show..!

Epic of Gilgamesh

April 5th, 2010

The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from Mesopotamia (Iraq) and is among the earliest known works of literary writing. It is considered the greatest surviving work of early Mesopotamian literature.

The earliest Sumerian versions of the epic date from the Third Dynasty of Ur (2150-2000 BC)

The most complete version existing today is preserved on 12 clay tablets from the library collection of 7th-century BC Assyrian  king Ashurbanipal.

The story revolves around a relationship between Gilgamesh, who has become distracted and disheartened by his rule, and his close companion, Enkidu. Enkidu is a wild man created by the gods as Gilgamesh’s equal to distract him from oppressing the citizens of Uruk. Together they undertake dangerous quests that incur the displeasure of the gods. Firstly, they journey to the Cedar Mountain to defeat Humbaba, its monstrous guardian. Later they kill the Bull of Heaven that the goddess Ishtar has sent to punish Gilgamesh for spurning her advances.

The latter part of the epic focuses on Gilgamesh’s distressed reaction to Enkidu’s death, which takes the form of a quest for immortality.

It is generally accepted that Gilgamesh was a historical figure, since inscriptions have been found which confirm the historical existence of other figures associated with him

“Ice Station” by Matthew Reilly

March 3rd, 2010

Ice Station is the first Novel i started after finishing Harry Potter series. Obviously i didn’t had much expectation due to the fact that i was used to the high standards set by J.K Rowling. But i was proven wrong, and found out that this is a different league of action thriller books.

Synopsis i got from the official web site of Matthew Reilly(I don’t want to give more details you see.! :-) )

“At a remote ice station in Antarctica, a team of US scientists has made and amazing discovery. They have found something buried deep within the coastal ice shelf. Something trapped inside a 100-million-year-old layer of ice. Something made of metal.

It is the discovery of a lifetime. A discovery of immeasurable value. A discovery men would kill for…

Led by an enigmatic Lieutenant Shane Schofield, a team of crack United States Marines is rushed to the station to secure this discovery for their country. They are a tight unit. Tough and fearless. They would follow their leader into hell. They just did…

In a land without boundaries, the only law is survival.”

Lieutenant Shane Schofield is one of the best character created by the author. He gives life to the character not by word of glory but by action. After you finish the novel you’ll feel like you have just finished an action packed Hollywood thriller movie… :)

So Enjoy the show..!

He had keen analytical abilities and organizational skills, but when you stripped it all away he was an assassin. He was America’s assassin, though. He was the very tip of the U. S. spear, the man on the ground getting things done, taking the battle to the very enemy who had sworn to bring a reign of terror and death to the people of the United States. Mitch Rapp was the front line soldier in the most singular sense of the word. In this era of laser-guided bombs, cruise missiles and surgical strikes, he was a neurosurgeon, operating in countries like Iran and Iraq for months at a time with virtually no aid from his handlers in Washington. He stalked his prey carefully, got in close and then when the time was right, he eliminated them. ”

All the members of SIGMA force is specialised in all kinds of weapons and warfare as well as they hold fast track PhD in specialised field such as anceint history, physics, chemistry etc . The ending of each book is so grand that i was awe stuck with his imagination. This is one of the best ‘sequel oreinted books’ I have read.
